Hello there! It’s Rebecca with you today for a special project of gratitude. In just a few short weeks, we have seen so many ‘regular people’ stepping up to become true heroes in the world’s time of need. Those in the fields of healthcare especially, along with grocery and retail workers, delivery men and women, first responders, and public transit drivers are putting their lives on the line to ensure people across the globe are having their basic needs met. Teachers, too, have had to hustle to create plans for emergency distance learning and if you’re a parent who has never homeschooled before, you’re seeing firsthand how much work your child’s teacher really does!
With these real superheroes in mind, I set out to create something to show my appreciation for their time, effort, and kindness. With the Fabric Quill Kit from We R Memory Keepers, and a few supplies I had on hand, I made some stitchings that I can frame and give away. You can pick up everything I’ve used today at a Joann’s store (have it shipped to your home or use curbside pickup for safety), except the frames, but they do also sell frames!
This is what you’ll need if you’d like to create your own gift:
Fabric Quill Kit (*Washable Ink Pen)
Silhouette or electronic cutting machine of choice
Design or Design Software (WRMK Icons & Words USB)
Fabric – 100% cotton works well
Embroidery Floss: DMC B5200 (white), 600 (dark pink), 3706 (coral pink), 819 (light pink), 967 (peach), 307 (yellow), 824 (royal blue)
Step 1: Choose your design and import it into the Silhouette design program. (If you’re using a machine other than the Silhouette, use the accompanying software for that machine.) I chose a rainbow, found on the WRMK Icons & Words USB, along with the message ‘spread cheer,’ the font for which is from my personal library.
Step 2: Set up the cutting machine to sketch or print (not cut) and choose the desired material–in this case, it’s 100% cotton fabric. *Be sure your fabric is flat on the surface of the cutting mat, smoothing out all wrinkles.
Step 3: Choose the correct adapter for the machine you’re using and insert the Washable ink pen; don’t forget to take the cap off and be sure the pen is inserted all the way. Send design to print. *You may need to test a couple of times before you find the right settings for your fabric and machine.
Step 4: After printing, place the printed fabric in an embroidery hoop, choose embroidery floss colors, and begin stitching. Holding fabric in the hoop will help keep it taught and make stitching much easier. Use the lines of the design to guide your stitches.
Step 5: When sewing is complete, remove fabric from hoop and rinse gently with water; this will remove any ink that shows outside of the stitches. Allow to dry and iron out any remaining wrinkles.
Step 6: Frame your stitched work and give it to a deserving hero to thank them for their service.
One last thing: If you don’t want to stitch the design, the Fabric Quill All-In-One kit also comes with an assortment of pens you can use to draw the design in color instead of using the washable pen and sewing.
I created 2 of the same stitched design to give to my children’s teachers; I always appreciated them before this, but my gratitude for the work and commitment they’ve shown during these last weeks of distance learning has skyrocketed! They rock and I want them to know it.
Please stay safe, friends, and if YOU are a teacher, medical personnel, retail or grocery worker, first responder, delivery man or woman, or public transit driver (or you work in any job deemed essential), THANK YOU for your service! You truly are a superhero.
