Hello We R fans! It’s Aly Dosdall here today to share a cool and easy technique you can use with the new Freestyle Pens. Some of you may be thinking the same thing I did when I first heard about the Freestyle Pens: I can’t draw and I hate my handwriting, so how can I use the Freestyle Pens?
Well, there are SO many ways to use these pens that don’t require mad lettering or drawing skills. Here’s an easy and very cool way: create a modern gold foil brush stroke background for your handmade cards!
Adding gold foil details to your projects doesn’t have to be difficult or complicated. For this card I used a ruler and the Bold Tip Freestyle Pen to create a modern brush stroke pattern on plain cardstock as the background.
The process was easy and I love the results. Let me show you how I did it!
First, I plugged my Bold Tip Freestyle Pen into my USB Battery Pack and let it heat up for 10 minutes. I love that there’s a light on the handle of the pen so I know it’s getting power.
Next, I prepped my cardstock by trimming it to size and placing it on the Magnetic Mat. The mat isn’t necessary for using the Freestyle Pens, but it sure is handy and saves on tape! I placed a piece of gold foil over the cardstock and secured it with two of the magnetic strips that come with the mat.
Then I placed my small magnetic ruler over the foil and started drawing rows of brush strokes across the cardstock. The cool thing about a brush stroke pattern is that it isn’t meant to be perfect or completely straight. The imperfections are what make it look modern and stylish, so that’s perfect for a freestyle pen, right? I just used the ruler to keep my lines somewhat uniform and separated.
I covered the entire piece of cardstock with brush strokes, and it only took me a few minutes. It turned out to be a cool, modern and stand-out background for this birthday card!
To complete the card I added a strip of patterned paper and some die cut ephemera pieces from the Dear Lizzy New Day collection. Then I added a few gold sequins to tie in the gold background.
