Hello everyone! It’s Eva on the blog today bringing you a tutorial on how to create a quilling skull to decorate during Halloween season.
Día de Muertos is a Mexican holiday, it involves family and friends gathering to pray and remember friends and family members who have died. What I love about that holiday is that it isn’t spooky, it is a celebration!
I was inspired by the bright colors and skulls to create a quilling skull to decorate my home during this season.
To create this quilling project first, you will need to cut ¼ inch strips of paper with your favorite We R trimmer. I am using the Trim and Score Board, that tool is always near my desk!
To create the border, glue black strips of paper forming the skull. You can use a template from the web or trace it yourself if you have the skills!
To quill your papers strips you have 2 choices: You can use a manual quilling tool like the one on the bottom, or, you can use the rotary tool with the quilling accessory to roll your paper in seconds!
I used the Spinning Tool and it was very easy and fast! My 4 year old helped me rolling with the manual tool and he had a wonderful time, I am sure your kids or grandkids will love to help too!
This was my first quilling project so I am a total beginner! Online you can find different quilling shapes but the ones I used the most were: the closed coil, the open coil, the teardrop and the marquis.
To create a teardrop you have to pinch one side of the open coil and to create the marquis pinch both sides. It is very easy and again, kids will love to help!
The first thing I did on my skull was the mouth; I glued strips of black cardstock and some quilling teeth on both sides. Next, I did the eyes and added decorations on the sides of the skull. I tried to keep everything symmetrical but you can use your imagination! It is fun and relaxing!
To glue my little pieces I used some tweezers, it was really helpful because otherwise I would move everything around with my fingers.
And here’s my Dia de Muertos skull finished, I really like how it turned out, colorful and happy! Perfect to remember all my family loved ones during the season.
The Spinning Tool was a huge success! It made my job easier, faster and you can even exchange accessories and even use it to create pompoms, tassels and rolled flowers!
Thanks for joining me today and I hope you liked this project. Quilling is very fun and if I could do it I am sure you can too.
Have a great day!
